Cindy's Roots
A Friendship Since Childhood
I had the opportunity to interview Faye Creveling who had been Cindy’s friend since the 4th grade. Both had attended Northampton High School, graduating in 1972. During her time there, Cindy was very involved and active playing both field hockey and basketball. She was also a part of the ski club and yearbook literary staff while also being the drama club treasurer and homeroom treasurer. Cindy’s time at Northampton helped shape her into the motivated person she became with all the activities she participated in. Faye mentioned Cindy would pick her up to go to school every day in her orange Volkswagen Bug. They attended prom together with their dates and sewed their own dresses together. “We always had a good time no matter what we did, even if we did nothing,” said Faye.
Early Work Experience
Among her many activities, she worked to earn money to afford a car and college money. After working at Burger King, she found a job closer to her home and worked at the Kopper Penny, a drive-in ice cream stand with sandwiches. This is also where she met her husband Dave. Cindy’s wedding was very unique. She married Dave at Hickory Run State Park, carrying a bouquet of pine branches and pine cones. The reception was a picnic in a pavilion, showing her love for the outdoors.
Pursuing Physical Therapy
Cindy knew in high school she wanted to be a physical therapist. After graduation, she went to the University of Florida and then the University of Pittsburgh. It was at the University of Pittsburgh where she earned the Distinguished Alumni Award for Pitt’s College of Health Sciences in 2020. In 2003, Cindy hired Faye as her office manager for her business, Cynthia Miles and Associates, with a logo of “Train to Triumph.” Faye recalls, “I remember being so proud of her as she established her business as the place where families would bring their children with disabilities for Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy. I remember receiving phone calls and the parents saying Cynthia Miles and Associates was recommended to them.”
